Overview

Remote harbors. Endless lines. Pure Arctic.

This is no ordinary ski trip — it’s an Arctic expedition aboard a floating basecamp, weaving between fjords at the very edge of the world. You’ll sail into the remote Hornstrandir Nature Reserve in Iceland’s West Fjords — just a few miles shy of the Arctic Circle — and ski pristine, seldom-traced ridges and peaks each day. At night, the yacht Byr becomes our cozy port: a warm haven offering gourmet meals and cozy cabins as we drift from one tucked-away harbour to the next.

The expedition yacht Byr is our movable ‘backcountry hut’ and awaits us at the end of every day with gourmet meals, warm and comfortable bunks, and friendly conversation.

Arrival

Arrive Ísafjörður, Iceland and transfer to hotel, welcome dinner.
Day 2

Depart from Ísafjörður, with 2-4 hours of sailing to Hesteyri in the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve. We will relax at anchor and maybe explore on the Zodiac and take a look at the old whaling station that once was the driving force in this now abandoned settlement. Since it will still bright in the evening during the latter part of the season, we will then have an option to do a short ski run.
Day 3-7

Each day starts with a buffet breakfast, then pack your gear and make your lunch to bring on the ski tour. We’ll start by skiing from Hesteyrarfjörður to Veiðileysufjörður, continuing on to explore areas like Lónafjörður (Lagoon fjord), Snókur mountain, and the Sópandi inlet and over to Hrafnfjörður (Raven Fjord). We’ll have access to ski tours in all different grades of difficulty and aspects. We’ll find good anchorages each night after skiing where we’ll enjoy dinner and the long polar days.
Day 8

Return to Ísafjörður, Iceland and depart for flight home.
*Flexibility is a must for all Arctic travel. This program is subject to change throughout the journey depending on ice, weather and local conditions.

: If any trip must be delayed due to bad weather, cancelled or delayed transportation, sickness or any other situation for which Ice Axe Expeditions cannot make provisions, all costs incurred during such delays must be borne by trip members.
: All requests for cancellations must be received in writing (via email). Cancellations received up to 180 days prior to departure are refunded less an administrative fee of $500 per person, with no exceptions. If cancellation is received between 180 and 95 days prior to departure, the 50% deposit is forfeited. Please note that for cancellations received within 94 days prior to departure, all deposits are forfeited.

If cancellation occurs within the 94-day period and full payment has not yet been received, the full penalty will still apply and unpaid monies are due immediately. If for any reason the voyage on the vessel is cancelled, passengers will not be entitled to make any further claim for compensation or damages, for any loss, consequential damage, expenses, loss of time or inconvenience which may result from such cancellation arising, whether or not such cancellation arises in whole or in part as a consequence of any act or omission of Ice Axe Expeditions or its servants or agents. For these and other reasons mentioned below, passengers are strongly encouraged to obtain trip cancellation insurance.

: We require that you have at least $100,000 in medical evacuation insurance coverage. Your insurance policy should cover ski mountaineering/hazardous sports. We cannot confirm each client’s policy individually; it is your responsibility to make sure your policy will cover you while you participate in your activities of choice on the expedition. We recommend including TRIP CANCELLATION/INTERRUPTION coverage in addition to the mandatory medical evacuation coverage.

: Iceland Air has flights serving Ísafjörður (IFJ) from Reykjavík Domestic Airport (RKV). It is advised to book roundtrip airfare from your home city to Reykjavík to accommodate for an Iceland Air roundtrip flight from Reykjavík (RKV) to Ísafjörður (IFJ). Please note Reykjavík has a domestic (RKV) and an international (KEF) airport.
