Ski Touring Iceland

Ski Tour the Troll Peninsula
March and April, 2025

Ski Touring Iceland

EXPEDITION OVERVIEW

On this tour we will sample the best of the best when it comes to spectacular nature and skiing while indulging in the rich culture and history of the region. We will base out of our own comfortable country style ski lodge, located just outside the fishing village of Dalvík on the Troll Peninsula of north Iceland. Karlsá Lodge is a luxurious base for ski touring with its ocean view hot tub and sauna, and splendid in house chef specializing in hearty gourmet feasts of fresh local ingredients.

The skiing area offers a great variety of mountains and slopes for every level of skier, from those who seek steep couloirs to those who like carving turns down the big open slopes. The choice is endless and one could easily spend a lifetime exploring the peaks and valleys of the region. After each day of skiing we might soak our weary but happy feet in one of the regions geothermal baths or simply relax in our own outdoor hot tub at Karlsá Lodge.

Itinerary

A typical day starts anywhere from 07:30 – 10:00 with breakfast being served an hour before the set departure time. The plan for the day and terrain selection is very dependent on snow conditions, weather and the group. You will not do the same route twice except by request from the group (which rarely happens as there is plenty of terrain to explore). At the end of each ski day the group will enjoy aprés ski snacks followed by a delicious meal where your guide will discuss the plan for the following day.

DAY 0 (Arrival Day): Pick up in Akureyri the capital of northern Iceland in the late afternoon / early evening followed by a 45 minute transfer to our ski lodge for a meet and greet. Welcome dinner is served and we go over the week’s agenda. After dinner we go through everyone’s gear just to be sure we are not missing anything

DAY 1: This is the first day of skiing. The morning is spent on detailed avalanche transceiver and avalanche rescue training, usually followed by a short run just to hash out any gear issues or other concerns. Our average daily vertical ranges from 1000-1600 meters depending on the group. For those that want more we can go until your legs say stop.

DAY 2-3 (or 2-5): During this trip you will discover what the Troll Peninsula is all about. Be it skiing the peaks above the small fishing villages while enjoying the ocean view or touring above valleys rich in history. The Troll Peninsula is the home of some of Iceland’s most accomplished skiers and it is no wonder considering the terrain they grew up in.

DAY 4 (or 6): This is our last ski day. In the morning or the night before we ask guests to pack up their things (with a change of clothes easily accessible). Guests should have their belongings ready to go so that we can make a quick departure for the airport after skiing. Depending on the feeling of the group we usually tour until the early afternoon and then head for Akureyri. We recommend that guests book an evening flight to get the most out of the last day.
